What are vitamins?

Vitamins are microscopic compounds required by the body in small amounts for normal growth and metabolism. They are found in various foods and assist with various biochemical reactions within the body as well as maintaining general health and well-being.

Where do they come from?

With the exception of vitamin D and K, which are produced within the body, all vitamins must be supplied through a balanced diet in order to supply our body with the various vitamins that are required for normal healthy functioning. Vitamin D is produced in the skin during exposure to sunlight and vitamin K is produced in the intestines.

How do they work?

Each vitamin has a different set of functions within the body and is classified as either fat-soluble or water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in different places within the body (A, D, K and E) and are used and broken down as the body requires. In contrast, water soluble vitamins cannot be stored within the body for very long and therefore must be supplied to the body through diet regularly.

What are minerals?

Minerals are essential nutrients that are found in varying quantities in all tissues and fluids within the body. They are also major constituents of bones, teeth, blood and nerves and can be found in various foods.

What do they do?

Minerals are required for:

  • Maintaining strong bones
  • Normal production of blood
  • Maintaining water balance in cells for the proper functioning of mental and physical processes

Mineral Classification

Minerals can be classified as macro minerals or essential trace elements. Macro minerals are present in relatively high amounts within the body whilst trace elements are present and required in small amounts. Both types of minerals are essential for proper body functioning.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants play an important role in supporting immunity and maintaining overall health and well-being by attacking "free radicals" within the body. "Free radicals" are by-products of normal chemical reactions in the body that cause damage to cells.

Why are they important?

Although your body has natural antioxidant mechanisms that protect you from most cell damage there are many environmental factors, like cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, radiation, excessive sunlight and certain drugs that can increase free radicals. Busy lifestyles, stress and illness can also increase the number of free radicals that are produced by your body, which is why it is important to make sure you have enough antioxidants to help protect your body.

Where are they found?

The major vitamins that function as antioxidants are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A. The Centrum Advance formulas and the Centrum For Women & Men products, also contain Lutein and Lycopene which are key antioxidants that help support healthy eyes and heart. The trace element selenium also has antioxidant properties. These nutrients all play a major role in combating free radical production.

Choosing the Right Supplement

The purpose of a multivitamin and mineral supplement is just that - to supplement the diet, not replace it.

With today's busy lifestyle, it's often difficult to ensure that you are getting all the fresh food you need for a healthy diet. The best advice is to eat a balanced diet, however many factors may impact on our diet and our nutrient levels. Some of these include lifestyle, eating patterns and even the way we store and prepare food.

If you can't achieve optimal vitamin and mineral intake with your diet alone, a vitamin and mineral supplement is recommended. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (or JAMA) recommends that all adults take a multivitamin supplement to combat sub-optimal levels of vitamins and minerals.

What to look for in a multivitamin?

With so many multivitamin and mineral supplements available it is often difficult to choose the one that is best suited to your needs.

A good multivitamin and mineral supplement should have the right balance and range of essential vitamins and minerals to help promote health and general well-being.

It will also have levels close to the recommended daily dose of vitamins and minerals that are not readily available in the western diet and, at the same time, should not contain an over supply of nutrients that are overly abundant in the western diet. It also should not have an over supply of fat-soluble vitamins in order to avoid the risk of toxicity.

The Centrum formulas are specially formulated with balanced levels of vitamins and minerals that closely represent the RDI's.
